Replacement of an 8200-cfm fan with a fan wall consisting of six smaller fans with VFD operation.
challenge
One of the biggest undertakings in maintenance work is the removal and replacement of old HVAC—and it’s made even more challenging when the system to be replaced lives at the top of a 34-story building. For Draper and Kramer, Incorporated, there was only one choice in mechanical contracting who could rise to the occasion: CTM.
solution
The Draper and Kramer building had an 8200-cfm fan that needed replacing in the penthouse of the company’s Chicago high rise. Because the fan was original to the building, an equivalent replacement would require significant openings to the envelope—a disruption no one wanted to endure. So, our team put our heads together and concepted a far simpler plan: building a custom fan wall consisting of six smaller fans, eliminating the need to open the building envelope altogether.
results
Our custom fan wall was not only the perfect solution for a minimally disruptive maintenance request. It was also a better solution than the system we were replacing. We saved the client time by getting in stock fans and simplifying the replacement process, and our solution uses variable frequency drive (VFD) to allow varied fan speed for energy efficiency. Plus, the team at Draper Kramer can breathe easy knowing that there’s the added security of constant airflow, even if one or two fans in the fan wall need maintenance. That’s what we call a win-win.
